feeling-camp.

2021

It takes a deep level of sensibility to understand the concept of camp, considering it is something that can be defined in a mere page. 'Notes on Camp’ by Susan Sontag is an experimental essay that uncovers its mysteries, and tries to explain the theory of ‘camp’.

Camp relies, undoubtedly, on absurd, goofy, extreme, playful, anti-serious connection with those around you. Just imagine the most outrageous, extreme feelings and then, translate it into couture pieces. In the fashion universe, Viktor & Rolf, Moschino, Valentino, Versace, are some brands that embrace campy styles. And people, of course. You cannot dissociate the pieces with the person who wears it. Met Gala in 2019 was a parade of camp: Lady Gaga (who burned the ground with 4 styles), Billy Porter, Celine Dion, Harry Styles, Jared Leto... It was probably the most creative party ever made in the history of fashion. It was not only about the pieces they wore, but also the theater, the drama, the excitement. It was camp at its best.

Camp is a materialized, intense and difficult feeling to understand because it is a momentaneous experience, like a performance. But when you feel it... It is intense, comedic, sincere.

Maybe you did not fully understand the concept of camp. Probably because we were not able to explain it. But we tried and that is the concept of camp: trying to hyperbolize every aspect of your life until you cannot anymore. Sometimes, we do not need to face life so seriously.
