underwear but not under inclusivity.
2020
Women have always fought for their freedom. Not only on society and culture, but also in fashion and body acceptance. For hundreds of years, the female gender has faced constraints regarding on what they had to wear in order to fit certain sizes. Undergarments such as corsets were common in the sixteenth century to achieve a perfect shape, evolving later to bras, waists, among others.
Lingerie and underwear are not the same. Lingerie is often associated with sexuality and underwear with basic pieces that we use every day. Nevertheless, the topic around "undergarments" needs discussion, since there is still a huge path to follow regarding diversity and inclusivity.
The lingerie sector is known to have greater evolution but also to be one of the most controversial players in fashion. In the past 200 years, lingerie has evolved and changed dozens of times — we have seen large and long shorts turn into small detailed thongs, pointed braws transform into true works of art and sometimes with no intention of support at all.
One thing that lingerie and underwear brands have lost over time is the sense of difference. The majority of brands tries to fit every woman in a handful of sizes, as if all of them exist and grow in a 1:1 proportion.
Luckily, there has been the rising of brands who work towards a different scenario for the industry, introducing not only a larger range of sizes but also of models portraying every body type. When googling "inclusive lingerie brands", you will find a list of them with the anthem that, big or small, "your side should not be a problem".
Both the change of times and the fall of companies like Victoria's Secret helped the industry catapult to a new era — an era where every size, every little girl, every woman can easily find and buy practical and sexy lingerie in their sizes. The next step? Having them closer to everyone, and not only online. The so called "standard" woman sizes are in every mall, every corner, how come others still can only buy online?
"Being vitruvian" is being aware that the human race can be whatever they want, no matter the size and shape. The lingerie and underwear market are not an exception and the changes over the past years are noticeable. The discussion is still on and it will continue to be, moving towards a more vitruvian reality.
